They are still playing around with the direction of their skill system. One idea is to have a maze-like system that eventually leads the player into a subclass of the player.

Skills (which include most special abilities) will be arranged on one large menu which will not be organized like a tree. This means that any skill you can afford to learn from the local trainer, or any skill node you loot from enemies, you can use regardless of other learned skills. Skill nodes are simply tools that teach your character new skills. One interesting addition is the randomization of skill nodes, so three nodes for the same skill could drop in one combat, but each would have different numbers for speed, cost, or even different side effects and extra abilities.
